Laurie Finan

Laurie spent her childhood growing up on Fishers Island. She has spent most of her adult years elsewhere in the United States, managing operations for a shipping company as well as buying and selling commercial and multifamily investment properties in Colorado, Connecticut and New York.

In 2003, she returned to Fishers Island, this time with her husband, so that their children would be educated at the Fishers Island School. Because of the excellent educational opportunities afforded by the best teacher-student ratio in New York and the safe, close-knit community, Laurie knew the island would be an ideal place to raise her family.

Registered and licensed as a broker in New York & Connecticut, Laurie is the Assistant Secretary of the Fishers Island Yacht Club, a Board Member of the Union Chapel Church, Coordinator of the Churches Golf Tournament, and a member of the Fishers Island School Board of Education.

Tim Patterson

Tim first came to Fishers Island one summer almost sixty years ago, and returned for as many summers as possible in the years since, until he and his wife were finally able to become full-time residents in 2004.

Prior to becoming a "year-'rounder", Tim managed and developed real estate in Dayton, Ohio for thirty years, among many other interesting things. Be sure to tap into his vast knowledge of the island and its people and history!

A licensed Real Estate Sales Associate, Tim is also a well-respected, licensed Home Improvement Contractor on the island. His experience and in-depth knowledge of house structure make him uniquely qualified to advise and assist both sellers and buyers.

Tim is a member of the Fishers Island Yacht Club, Adjutant of the American Legion, a Fireman with the Fishers Island Fire Department, Navigator of the Fishers Island waterborne ambulance "Sea Stretcher", and a Board Member of the Fishers Island Waste Management District. He is also an avid ocean racing sailor and fisherman.

Samantha Finan

Samantha graduated from the Fishers Island School with Regents designation. During her six years at the Fishers Island School, she was very involved in the school and community; she was always busy with theater, community service, leadership activities, teaching Sunday School, etc. Sammie is currently attending Rollins College in Winter Park, FL in the class of 2013. Samantha is currently on two committees at Rollins; she is co-chair of the Senior Gift Committee and Marketing Manager and Chair of ACE (All Campus Activities).

Samantha attended classes at the New York Real Estate Institute in New York City and received her Real Estate Salesperson license in August, 2010. During her time off from college, Samantha works in the office learning the business. She has been very active with rentals and lease management. Samantha attended the Triple Play Real Estate Conference in Atlantic City, NJ in December 2010 where she earned continuing education credits by attending seminars and workshops.

Seller's Agent

A seller’s agent has, without limitation, the following fiduciary duties to the seller: reasonable care, undivided loyalty, confidentiality, full disclosure, obedience, and duty to account. In addition the seller’s agent is also subject to any specific provisions set forth in an agreement between the agent and the seller. In dealings with the buyer, the seller’s agent should : exercise reasonable skill and care in performance of the agent’s duties, deal honestly, fairly and in good faith and disclose all facts known to the agent materially affecting the value or desirability of the property, except as otherwise provided by law.

Buyer's Agent

Did you know that most real estate agents are seller's agents? That means that unless you have a buyer agency agreement or dual agency agreement, the person you're sharing your personal information with works for the seller, not you.

A buyer’s agent has, without limitation, the following fiduciary duties to the buyer: reasonable care, undivided loyalty, confidentiality, full disclosure, obedience, and duty to account. In addition, the buyer’s agent is also subject to any specific provisions set forth in an agreement between the agent and the buyer.

In dealings with the seller, the buyer’s agent should: exercise reasonable skill and care in performance of the agent’s duties, deal honestly, fairly and in good faith and disclose all facts known to the agent materially affecting the buyer’s ability and/or willingness to perform a contract to acquire the seller’s property that are not inconsistent with the agent’s fiduciary duties to the buyer.

Dual Agency with Designated Sales Agents

With full disclosure and informed consent in writing, the principals and broker who represent both parties as a dual agent may designate a sales agent to represent the buyer and another sales agent to represent the seller to negotiate the purchase and sale of real estate. Shutters & Sails is staffed to handle both sides of a real estate transaction with designated agents to represent the best interests of the buyer and seller.

Community Preservation Fund

On Fishers Island a 2% real estate transfer fee is paid by buyers. All money raised in a town stays in the town in which the real estate transfer fee is levied and is used to protect open space and farmland.
